Sony Dwi Kuncoro, champion of the recent Yonex Japan Open badminton tournament, cruised through to the second round at China Masters Super Series in Changzou on Wednesday.
The World's No. 6, Sony (fifth seeded in the tournament) eased past Eric Pang of Denmark 21-12, 21-15 in 30 minutes at Olympic Sports Center, but fellow Indonesian, seventh seed Taufik Hidayat had to work hard to gain his 17-21 21-13 22-20 win over Muhammad Hafiz Hashim of Malaysia, according to tournament's website www.tournamentsoftware.com. Sony will meet Englishman Andrew Smith while Taufik takes on China's Chen Yu in the second round.
The tournament is deprived of the world's top two players, as Malaysian Lee Chong Wei (whom Sony defeated in the Japan finals) and Chinese Lin Dan both opted for a no-show. In the men's double, Muhammad Ahsan and Bona Septano (who were both defeated in the final in Tokyo) reached the third round without breaking a sweat. The Indonesian pairs got by in the first round and clinched their second round win without playing because China's Guo Zhendong and Xie Zhongbo failed to turn up.
Olympic gold medalists and top seeds Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan will open their campaign against Thais Songphon Anugritayawon and Tesana Panvisvas on Thursday.
The other two matches will show Indonesia-Malaysia oppositions with Hendra Aprida Gunawan and Joko Riyadi facing Mohammad Zakry Abdul Latif and Mohammad Fairuzizuan Mohammad Tazari, and eighth seeds Yonatan Suryatama Dasuki and Rian Sukmawan up against Mohammad Razif Abdul Latif and Tan Wee Kiong.
In the mixed double, sixth seeds Muhammad Rijal and Vita Marissa of Indonesia (who won in Tokyo) will open their bid for a back-to-back win against Malaysian Hoon Thien How and Chin Eei Hui, while fifth seeds Flandy Limpele and Greysia Polii will play Hong Kong's pair Yohan Hadikusumo Wiratama and Chau Hoi Wah.
Fifth seeds Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Greysia Polii will battle Chinese Cheng Shu and Zhao Yunlei in the women's doubles
